Richard's Character Profile

Richard is very sly and cunning. He is portrayed in our trailer as being a psychopath, almost with a split personality and is very good at lying at it has been his profession for his entire life; Lawyer.

Richard was born on 19th March 1982. His childhood was traumatic and he was frequently beaten by his mother as a result of her alcohol dependency. This left him emotionally scarred as he grew into a violent teenager and began fighting back.

His tragic youth led him into a life of crime and soon he became Criminal Lawyer at the age of 23. He often spent his days defending criminals who had been convicted for awful and disgusting crimes, and soon he began accepting the mindset that he finds "right". Very early in his life he became involved in various crimes and drug-taking, which forced him to obtain a more aggressive mentality.

By the age of 25, he was obsessed with sadism and inflicting pain on those he loved. His pleasure was to brainwash women to fall in love with him and torture them through months of pain. He spent his 5 month wedding anniversary chopping off his wife’s fingers and force feeding them to her.

A year went by and Richard grew more and more sadistic and after his second marriage, his new wife discovered blood stains in his brand new car and threatened to call the police. Soon after, she mysteriously disappeared and was never found.

His third marriage was even more brutal. For 10 months, Richard found pleasure by peeling off his new wife’s skin and dousing petrol in her wounds. Often he tied his wife underneath his car and drove around town with her hands and knees dragging on the floor. The only thing found of his third wife was her liver, chopped up into pieces and thrown into the local lake.

Shortly after his 27th birthday, Richard was arrested after an officer looked into his case and found it highly suspicious. He spent 2 days in the county bail custody and was soon released on bail due to lack of evidence, but was warned not to leave the area. Richard, having been a Criminal Lawyer, was very aware of his rights and decided to go to an unpredictable area where he would be able to legally marry the “woman of his sadistic dreams” and not be forced to go back to prison.

British Low Budget Films

The United Kingdom has had a large impact on modern cinema and has one the most respected film industries in the world. Despite a history of successful productions, the industry is characterised by an ongoing debate about its identity (including economic and cultural issues) and the influences of American and European cinema, although it is fair to say a brief 'golden age' was enjoyed in the 1940s from the studios of J. Arthur Rank and Alexander Korda. The British film industry has produced some of the greatest actors, directors and motion pictures of all time including Sir Alfred Hitchcock, Powell and Pressburger, David Lean, Laurence Olivier, David Niven, Michael Caine and Anthony Hopkins. Many British film-makers learnt their craft making these films, including Michael Powell and Alfred Hitchcock.

The new century has so far been a relatively successful one for the British film industry. Many British films have found a wide international audience, and some of the independent production companies, such as Working Title, have secured financing and distribution deals with major American studios. Working Title scored three major international successes, all starring Hugh Grant, with the romantic comedies Bridget Jones's Diary (2001), which grossed $254 million worldwide; the sequel Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason, which earned $228 million; and Richard Curtis's directorial debut Love Actually (2003), which grossed $239 million. At the same time, critically-acclaimed films such as Gosford Park (2001), Pride and Prejudice (2005), The Constant Gardener (2005), The Queen (2006) and The Last King of Scotland (2006) also brought prestige to the British film industry. The turn of the new century saw a revival of the British horror film. Lead by Danny Boyle's acclaimed hit 28 Days Later (2002), other examples included Dog Soldiers, The Descent and the comedy Shaun of the Dead.

BAFTA Award for Best British Film
Ay the 1993 British Academy Awards ( BAFTA) the Alexander Korda Award for the best British film was introduced. Although the idea was dropped in the 1960sm, the BAFTA’s had included the best British film category. However since 1993 the winners have been:

1993 The Crying Game, 1994 Shadowlands, 1995 Shallow Grave, 1996 The Madness of King George, 1997 Secret and lies, 1998 Nil by Mouth, 1999 Elizabeth, 2000 East is East, 2001 Billy Elliot, 2002 Gossford Park, 2003 The Warrior, 2004 Touching the Void, 2005 My Summer of Love, 2005 Wollace and Grommit of the were-rabbit, 2007 The Last King of Scotland, 2008 This is England and 2009 Man On Wire.

Unconfirmed Actors

I have spoken to two of my friends from Cardinal Wiseman, and they agreed to do the acting for our film trailer. It is yet an unconfirmed decision and they are still waiting for the script before they confirm, which I promised to give them some time this week. This means we will have to rush with our timing.

A big thank you to Erika Scarth and Edward Phillips!

Wembley Arena

We have decided to change the location for Jane and Richard's proposal from Waterloo Bridge to Wembley Arena. Today, Sejal and Vardan went to Wembley Arena and made some photographs of the setting we would like to use for the proposal. They will be proposing on the big white stairs just opposite the Wembley Arena entrance, at 10pm at night beside the brightly lit lights and wonderful fountains - a great location for a proposal. Although the area was slightly tedious when we arrived, due to the timing, the journey was quite fun lol. We hope the actors will agree to travel with us for the filming.

Lesson 21/01/10

Yesterday, we had an experimental lesson, where we were able to familiarise ourselves with media props such as a camera and tripod, focusing on how they function and when and where they should be used. This was very helpful as we were able to get a rough idea of what we should be looking to do in our own production. Our task was to produce a sample of a narrative given by our teacher, which was to show someone walking into a classroom.

Initially, we had planned a storyboard beforehand as we were told do, however, as we carried out our experimental use of props, shots that had been written down and produced as a storyboard, had changed drastically. This taught us a major lesson where we realised, in order to have a successful production we need to focus on our storyboards in great depth, as changes are bound to happen, therefore we should be ready and able to cope with situations where things are being changed last minute.

Whilst working on this, we learnt how to edit using a specific editing software. This was very helpful as we will now be able to edit our productions confidently. We also learnt how we can follow a sequence of a narrative with different shots, angles and locations.

Overall, this lesson was very helpful as we now feel more confident about going out and about to shoot and edit for our production.

Angela Character Profile

As Jane is suspicious on Richard’s sudden change of behaviour, she turns to her best friend (Angela) for help. This demonstrates that Angela is kind hearted and plays a very strong hearted character within the film. She helps Jane when it’s needed, reflecting on how close the two friends are. Angela will not be seen in the trailer as she only speaks to Jane over the phone. This means that we do not have to worry on Angela’s appearance, and the way in which she is portrayed. However we will need to pay specific attention through her dialogue.

Practice Filming

I think our practice filming went alright. The only thing we need to work on is making sure we have every single shot planned in detail before filming so that we do not waste time in our locations. We can't stand there in the library or in Superchef taking hours to tell our actors how to sit and figure out where the camera will stand at last minute.

I suggest we go to the locations we already have permission from, and plan everything there before the shooting. Otherwise we may have a different idea in mind but will have to change at last minute if the location doesn't fit our ideas.

Also, we need to really brief the actors beforehand so they know exactly how they are sitting and make sure they do not change any vital positions. We observed this when Dilwinder was being filmed while writing on the table, and in the next shot she had her hand under her chin. We can't afford to make mistakes like that because people will spot it immediately.

I've spoken to Acropolis Restaurant and they told me we cannot discuss things like that on the phone. I told them we'll be popping in on Monday to speak to the manager, so if anybody can't make it you have to tell me now so I can call them and cancel.

Location: Park

This is a picture of the area in Ravenour Park, Greenford that we will use in our trailer. This is the type of effect the area is supposed to have; dark, gloomy, foggy, mysterious, night effect...which would connote, and could be a representation of Richard's personality.

Reconsidered target audience

After doing our presentation, we were told that our target audience was too wide and therefore we met after school to reconsider our target audience. We concluded that our film will be targeted at the demographics of C1, C2 and D. The reason for this is that they are average people who have an average income and are not stingy about spending and therefore, will look at leisures of life, such as going to the cinema.

The psychographics, however, has also been changed to Mainstreamers, Aspirers and Carers. The reasons for this are;

Mainstreamers -> People in this category are those who don't like to stand out and do things to fit in without attracting any attention. This type of audience will be attracted to our film because our film's genre would suit them as love is something everyone experiences, whether it is between mother/daughter, bf/gf, dog/cat etc.

Aspirers -> People in this category like to stand out either by flashing out money or by their appearance, attracting attention everywhere they go and showing off their status. This type of audience would be attracted to our film because they have money and want to show it off. A common place where people go to hang out or to go on a date would be cinemas.

Carers -> These people show that they care about the world through recycling etc. This specific type would appeal to our film as the disequilibrium concerns Carers.

Little more research for editing.

Here is what i thought is a good trailer. ..

We should use a lot of cuts in our trailer to portray Richard as a sick freak. The scene where Richard is approaching Jane's house... maybe somewhere there we could have loads of build up of cuts..

If you watch the trailer the use of quick cuts... really brings out the evilness within Sylar.. and the music... its more of an instrumental... and helps bring about tension...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RS3dEFX1Zuk

Sejal + Dilwinder

Research on songs...

Possible songs we can use in our trailer...

Elvis Presley - She's not you --> this because it would go with the trailor.. at the begining it will enhance their love, however when things go wrong, the music distorts and it sounds freaky... just like Richards character...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VjiBHT3Z0d8

Elvis Presley - Jailhouse rock --> it relates to the twist where Jane finds, Richard has eloped from jail custody. ... and because its funky, it would grab everyones attention...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zRu3tw9fYxE

Michael Bublé - Haven't met you yet --> this would be good, especially the begining, it will help develop the story... andd.. the lyrics would go with them falling in love, thenn it could again be distraught and interpreted in a freakish way.. its beaty and loud again grabbing the audience's attention...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1AJmKkU5POA
a link for Michael Bublé 's - Haven't met you yet

Any other ideas guys? ..

Permissions.

We have permission to record at the restaurant. (signed letter)

You have my permission to record at my house!...oh and my parents permission :)

We need to visit Greenford library once again.. and discuss dates and what areas we will be using to shoot....also we have to ask them to reccomend us a suitable time for them, as we don't want to disturb others who visit the library. . . i.e .. two hours before they close the library as it won't be so busy..

I don't think we need permission to record at a publice park. So that's not an issue.

Lastly, Super Chef cafe... when are you all free?.. cause we need to go and talk to the owners or managers regarding shooting, again mentioning dates, timings and what not! :)

I guess we could get the lirbary and super chef out of the way at once, they're two minutes away from one another!

Research

Vardan and I had looked at various film trailors, for both Thriller and Romance genres, so we are able to relate the similarities and differences between our production and other films. We looked at;

-Meet Joe Black – Romance
-In the name of the father - Drama
-Scream – Crime/Mystery/Thriller
-Fallen – Suspense/Thriller/Mystery
-Shawshank redemption – Crime/Drama/Murder
-He's just not that into me - Romance
-Jhon tucker must die - Romance/Comedy/Drama

Looking at these films trailors, we were able to evaluate our storyline/concept. As, the trailors attract different audiences, i.e Jhon tucker must die, attracts and is more or less related to teens, wheras on the other Fallen is aimed at a more mature target audience, as the story is developed with great complex, which makes it harder for teens to understand the plot and what is going on in the film etc...

http://www.youtube.com/ - used to watch trailors
http://www.imdb.com/ - used to get background research on the films listed above.

Vardan and I also discussed the Equilibriums as shown below...
Equilibrium – meeting of characters.
Dis-equilibrium – Jane marries Richard and things start to go downhill.
New equilibrium – Jane finds out the hidden truth and secret intentions of Richard.

We also decided to end with a cliffhanger referring to the brief with an enigma ending! This was in some ways influenced by trailors i.e fallen where they ended their trailor with and enigma aswell.

Random Idea for Promotion..

Dudes, you know we were all confused on how to promote our film..
Welll.....
How about we make a rough sample of synergy?... We could get hold of a popcorn tub and come up with some design (doesn't have to be artistic.. we could just use paint) get screenshots of our film, combine them together, have some overlap eachother, add the title of our film and release dates with a small certification logo of 15... what do you think? .. It was a random idea, thought i'd let you lot know, and it seems pretty simple... and all we have to do is then stick it around the tub .... ?!? :)

Possible use of Lighting

Below is a list of possible use of lighting.

-V-Light
-Pro – Light
-Key – Light
-Reflectors
etc..

The reason for why I think we may have to use lighiting in our production is because for example; the lighting at home comes out orange not only on on still images but also on moving images. Threfore to get rid of the orangey effect, we need to brighten up some areas with the use of lighitng, i.e the hallway and living room. Im not too sure on what Lighting needs to be used and how.. but we will talk about that with Ms.Holliday..

Ohh! We also need to use lighting as back up, for when Richard proposes outdoors, and the park scene where they go for strolls. So basically all shots that will be taken outdoors, at home or in the dark will need a bit of lighitng.

Lastly, lighting will also make our film look more proffessional.... and will help with bringing about the weirdness of Richard... i.e Dark and dull lighitng to connote evil? or Dim lighitng to connote a warm atmosphere for when he proposes.. What do you lot think?

Btw, we need to test out what lighting we need to use and make a note of that, so on the day we plan to shoot, we can get straight at it, rather than having to decide what we should use amd where, cause it will only waste time...

Let me know when you lot are free. So i can try and get everyone out of the house, avoiding distractions whilst we try doing some Media work! :)

Basic Information

Genre: Romance/Thriller /Suspense
-why? These are the three most popular genres of today, combining these together would result a wider range of audience.
Cert 15
-why? The concept of a serial killer and build up of tension may be too explicit for those under the age of 15.
Target audience:
Mainstreamers, Aspirers, Succeeders, Individualists and carers.
A,B,C1,C2,D,E
Appeals to both genders
-why? The story is of a general topic. Love is something everyone experiences, whether it is with their friends, blood relations or couples. And Murder is a common issue which affects all members of society. This combined also allows the film to appeal to its targeted audience regardless their social class or gender.

Short Synopsis

Secret Intentions
"The battle between reality and appearance"
Short Synopsis...

Jane, who is 24 years old, is a very fond reader. The trailer will begin with her visiting her local library. She looks for new editions on a book that she is reading and while taking a book from the shelf, she takes no notice of a man staring directly at her through the gap in the shelf. She drops the book and the same man strangely rushes over to pick it up for her. They both introduce themselves and begin talking about what a fantastic book Jane had picked up.

The two characters gradually get carried away and begin talking about other things. As the conversation becomes more and more personal, Richard asks whether she would like to go out for lunch some time. Jane, optimistic about her fate, says yes and soon they both find themselves going out for lunch in a local café and, over time, begin going to upscale restaurants for dinner.

It seems as if they both fall in love, and seem to be getting along perfectly. After some time and more outgoings, their relationship takes a toll as Richard proposes. Jane hesitates at first but still agrees to marry him, thinking, as always, that her fate has led her to the right path. A week after the couple are married, Richard’s behaviour slowly deteriorates and he begins to act very aggressively towards Jane. Jane soon finds herself trapped in a web of lies and secrets, of which she cannot escape. She regularly rings her friend and complains, and always receives the same replies; that she made the decision in great haste. She is advised to research on Richard’s history if she doubts her trust for him. After days of searching, Jane suddenly comes across a 5-year-old police report, hidden away in Richard’s office. The report states Richard had previously been married three times and all three wives had mysteriously disappeared, with no evidence left behind. At this point, Jane screams with fear as she reads on to find that Richard had escaped bail custody and is currently wanted for trial. She then realises that their marriage had indeliberately permitted Richard to legally live outside the convicted area.

Whilst Jane sits in shock, a man is approaching her house dressed in all black and carrying a huge steak knife. Jane, unaware of this, starts panicking over what she had read on the report. The front door suddenly bursts open and Richard’s voice echoes throughout the home; “I’M HOME!” Jane falls into a game of hide and seek as Richard had planned to kill Jane that very night...
